  2. 1. The artist uses the Statue of Liberty, which symbolizes liberty, freedom, and democracy. She is holding a "Keep Out" sign and is blocking a Jewish refugee ship from coming into the harbor. This shows the difference between what the statue of liberty represents and U.S. actions.
    2. A. This cartoon tells me that U.S. immigration policies were restrictive.

    3. I think the cartoonist opposes these immigration policies because if he supported them he would not have represented the statue of liberty in such a way.
    4. Even though the U.S. may have been restrictive with all immigrants at the time, I personally can't believe that the U.S. would turn away Jewish refugees. If the U.S. is supposed to be a"land of opportunity" how can they turn away people who are in desperate need for protection?
